Carte de l'itinéraire urbain de El Colmenar, Cortes de la Frontera (en espagnol et en anglais)

This publication has been made under the Development Plan to Promote Tourism in the Serrania de Ronda, is bilingual (English and Spanish), and includes at the back a description and a map of the urban routes of the Serrania de Ronda.

The origins of the village are quite recent; It is said that El Colmenar appeared when the hydroelectric power station of Las Buitreras and the railway station were built, about a century ago.

However, archaeological sites, as Las Motillas cave, where engravings and paintings from the Palaeolithic have been discovered, the ruins of the city of Saeponia or the Pasadablanca baths -both from the Roman period - show beyond a doubt that there were already human settlements in this area in prehistoric times. El Colmenar constitutes the entrance to the Málaga area of the Nature reserve of Los Alcornocales. The vegetation surrounding is composed of an impressive forest stand that extents for tens of kilometres. The most representative tree is the cork oak, from which benefits has been traditionally taken by extracting the cork.

Recommended Walk:

The route would take place in the surroundings of El Colmenar, where the most outstanding places are found. It is not for nothing that El Colmenar is placed in one of the most important forest stands of the South of Europe. You should visit the “arboreto” and also the Guadiaro River that offers us one of the most wonderful places in the Serranîa. Specially Las Buitreras Canyon that was declared as Natural Monument in 2003. Another outstanding place to visit is the hydroelectric power station. It will bring you back to the first half of the 20th century, when the main hydraulic building works took place in the Serranîa, a real heroism in engineering in times when the access to these places was quite difficult.
