Carte de l'itinéraire urbain de Igualeja (en espagnol et en anglais)

This publication has been made under the Development Plan to Promote Tourism in the Serrania de Ronda, is bilingual (English and Spanish), and includes at the back a description and a map of the urban routes of the Serrania de Ronda.

Igualeja is placed nearby the source of the Genal river at the top of the Valley. The urban area has a marked Moorish layout with narrow, winding streets. After the conquest of Ronda when fighting to conquer the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada in 1485, the population was mainly morisca (converted Muslims). In 1570, when the moricos were expelled from Igualeja, the village experienced a massive depopulation, and even
urban areas such as Benajerîz disappeared.

The origins of name of the village are quite unknown. There are two possible explanations.

It is thought that it comes from the Arabic word Al-walay, meaning bend. The other belief is that Igualeja’s name comes from the fact that upon the expulsion of the Moriscos, the Christians divided the lands of its former occupants “por igual” (“equally”).

Recommended Walk:

The start point of the route is placed in the source of the Genal river. From here, go, bordering the upper part of the town, to the Albaicîn neighbourhood, which is on your left. From this urban labyrinth, you will get to the main street. Continue on to reach Santa Rosa de Lima Church – dating from the 16th C. If you keep on walking, you will find on your right the Andalucîa square, where the Town Hall is placed. Carry on until finding the Divino Pastor square. From here, go to Embovedada square, square under which the Genal river flows. From this point, you can enjoy the nice walk parallel to the Genal river. The last part of the route will lead you to the upper part of the village, better known as Santa Rosa neighbourhood, the best preserve part of Igualeja.
