Close to Iznate on the banks of the Cajiz Stream lies this small Vélez district of Arabic origin that was built around the San José church.

This is a fascinating destination for archaeology lovers because there are archaeological remains preserved from Mudejar constructions, attesting to the existence of at least four different Mudejar settlements in the area: Macharalate, Benadalid, La Mezqueta and Los Iberos. These findings can be seen in Calle del Chorillo street.

Caííz’s commemoration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which takes place on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, is notably attractive. A living representation of the Passion of Christ is performed, and thirty-six scenes from the Old and New Testaments are represented on a purpose-built stage recreating Herod’s palace, the Courtroom, the Samaritan woman at a well, and the Olive grove, in a natural setting that confers uniqueness and beauty to this stage production.

The origin of these texts, which constitute a great heritage in Cajiz, dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. They were initially performed at the church atrium. In the absence of images to parade around, this play would let the faithful experience religiosity through its pronounced theatricality. All characters would be played by a choir wearing masks and singing saetas (sacred songs) when the most spiritual scenes had to be enhanced.

More than 250 actors, all fans and locals of the village, overwhelm the visitors who attend the event since this popular staging is considered the oldest in Andalusia.
