This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.

The province of Málaga has unique weather and rugged landscapes that give rise to a wide variety of ecosystems dominated by fungi. One example of such diversity is its mountain pastures, and its cork, holm oak, Spanish fir, pine and chestnut groves. Coveted mushrooms like Caesar's, boletus, golden chanterelles, king trumpets, saffron milk caps and the trumpets of the dead can be picked. However, there are other toxic or deadly mushrooms too, such as death caps, fly amanitas, Gyromitra esculentas, and fools webcaps.
Mycology has been steadily growing in the past few years, particularly concerning the picking of mushrooms and fungi—a growth process in which the Serranía de Ronda and the province of Málaga have played a part.

More and more people flock to Málaga mountains and fields every autumn and spring to spend a pleasant time in nature and pick some delicious mushrooms on their way home.

Given this growing interest in mushrooms, Cortes de la Frontera hosts the Mycological Conference, allowing participants to discover firsthand the approaches and efforts that public authorities and other organisations are developing at the moment.

The conference also seeks to spread the idea that these natural resources, which are quite unknown, can contribute to rural growth. At the same time, it aims to ensure the resource's sustainability in order to establish and apply a mycological resources value enhancement and sustainable management model that will provide social, environmental and economic benefits.

The event is held in November and has an extensive activity programme including mushroom and photo exhibitions, field trips, classification workshops, conferences and mycological tastings. 

Due to its friendly nature, it has become a huge success that keeps the village focused on improving each new edition.
