Agrogant: Farming & Livestock Fair of Antequera. May. Unique Festival
This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.
On the way down to the Antequera plain, the first sight is an extensive meadow which, depending on the time of year, will look like an immense tapestry with changing shades of green and ochre. To the right lies the legendary Peña de los Enamorados and its impossible love story leading to a tragic end; to the front, gentle hills that barely define the extension of the plain, and to the left, sheltered by El Torcal Natural Park, an array of typical Andalusian houses including the Christian towers and the Moorish fortress of the city.
One might think that such a view is part of a formidable canvas painted by an ingenious artist. However, this dazzling first panoramic sight would hardly reveal the magnificent ensemble of monuments in Antequera, whose thousand-year-old history—a melting pot of diverse civilisations—can be felt in every corner.
Once a year, Antequera holds the Farming and Livestock Fair (AGROGANT) during the last weekend in May. Its origins date back to 1856 when it was launched with the purpose of “increasing commercial transactions by providing industry, agriculture and livestock prosperity”.
A lot has happened since then, but the original goal has not experienced significant changes. This event has now become an excellent example of Antequera's ability to combine its industrial and business development with the preservation of traditional productive sectors.
AGROGANT's programme brings together activities as varied as the Purebred Spanish Horse Championship, a Málaga goat contest, an agrifood expo, a photomarathon and some exciting conferences.
Nowadays this fair is very well-known all over Andalusia, and it is one of the most important events of its kind in the region.
