Fiesta del Verdeo “Día de la Haba” (Broad Bean Day). Villanueva de la Concepción. April. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

The Villanueva de la Concepción territory extends from the foothills of the Sierra de El Torcal all the way to the Montes de Málaga, but its orography is much more associated with the Antequera area than with the Montes area, which is why extensive and fertile plains can suddenly turn into rugged terrain. However, the lands of Villanueva de la Concepción, dominated by the impressive massif of El Torcal, yield large quantities of olives, almonds and wheat.

The village annually celebrates the Día de la Haba (Broad Bean Day), a festival aiming to promote this essential local crop. Not surprisingly, this pulse production ranges in the municipality from 1 million kilograms to 2,5 million kilograms depending on whether the year's harvest was favourable or not. The ceremonies kick off at 10 a.m. with broad bean and olive oil tastings at the local bars. Listed below are some other remarkable activities taking place at the event: performances of two different verdiales bands (Panda Infantil de Verdiales Santa María del Cerro and Panda de Verdiales de Villanueva de la Concepción), free
broad bean casseroles samplings (served from 1 p.m. in the Plaza de Andalucía square), tapas tour through the village (bars will be offering tapas using the broad bean as the main ingredient), and belly-dancing lessons and exhibitions (at 4 p.m. in the Plaza de Andalucía square).

Over 30 stands will be present at the fair, showing a wide variety of products: sausages, cosmetics, pastries, ceramics, antiques, and pleita articles—a strip of braided esparto, pita or palm leaves used to manufacture mats, hats, agricultural baskets, and also little sculptures, cheese moulds and farming tools. Most of these stands belong to Villanueva de la Concepción companies or institutions. Cereales y Frutos Secos El Torcal usually provides the beans for the food preparation. The Plaza de Andalucía square is the nerve centre of the day's celebration.
