Fiesta del Mosto (Wine Must Festival). Atajate. November. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

This municipality lies on a gentle riverbed leading to the Genal Valley, and the town centre sits on a slope of the Cerro del Cuervo, which serves as a shelter from the peak of Peñas Blancas and the Cerro del Cuervo itself. Its summit rises only a few metres above the rooftops in town and constitutes the base for the parish church tower. As one would expect, many attractions grace the area, like the impressive panoramic view over the Genal and Guadiaro valleys from the edge of the village.

The church's silhouette stands out powerfully above the roofs, as well as the landscape including olive groves, vineyards and cereal fields together with holm oaks, cork oaks, and bushes.

While having a small population, Atajate has a delicious gastronomy and now wants to recover the great winemaking tradition of the area. After the grape harvest, villagers contribute with some must that has been extracted in the old-fashioned way and bottled in carafes to be distributed during the festival. On the last Saturday in November, a verbena (street party) is held in the town square until the early hours of the morning and freshly fermented must is offered as an accompaniment to the most typical dish: migas (“breadcrumbs” in Spanish).

Hundreds of people join the residents of the municipality in a festive day that was created twenty years ago and has become a very anticipated event in the entire region. This is partially because Atajate is one of the few municipalities where one can purchase one hundred per cent traditionally-produced must.
