Benadalid's residents have succeeded in making the most of its many charms, making the village one of the Genal Valley’s most notable attractions. The beauty of its natural setting derives from the geographical location—in the heart of the Guadiaro Valley, surrounded by the Tajo de los Aviones, Tajo de la Cruz and Monte del Cuco mountains. The town centre is no less fascinating. It has two separate parts: one of them features the distinctive Arab legacy with its narrow, steep streets while the other boasts a straighter layout. The latter is centred around the village’s main square, where you will find the San Isidro parish church—one of the municipality’s most significant buildings, erected in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 18th century.

Another of Benadalid’s major monuments is the former Moorish castle, which sits on the outskirts of the town centre and plays a leading role every August, as it serves as a stage for the Moors and Christians Festival. Other makeshift stages can be found around the picturesque village, where a military battle is recreated in memory of the Mudejar revolt that took place in Sierra Bermeja in 1501.

This theatre performance is recited in verse and tells the story of a battle fought between Moors and Christians to seize the saint San Isidoro. During this two-day event, the Moorish forces defeat the Christians on the first day. However, the second day culminates in the victory of the Christian army followed by the conversion of the infidels.

Most of Benadalid’s residents take part in this extraordinary performance.
