The beauty of Benamargosa is beyond breathtaking. At the entrance to the town lies what appears to be a large, well-planned, and meticulously cared-for orchard, where lush-green citrus, orange and lemon trees share the same soil with subtropical fruit trees that have been recently introduced in the area. These terraces climb up to the nearby hills, with no vegetation at their highest peaks.

The Arabic origin of the municipality can be observed in the layout of the houses that wind up the slopes of the hillside. The picturesque urban centre preserves the charm of its narrow, quiet streets, sprinkled with whitewashed façades. Equally distinctive is the locals' traditional attachment to the more ancient customs that have been shaped through their festive calendar, as well as to the rich cuisine based on regional produce.

In April, Benamargosa holds a big celebration known as “Fiesta del Campo” (County Festival) at which all residents offer the best of their harvests.

This culinary festival's main goal is to highlight the extraordinary agricultural wealth produced in the interior of the Axarquía and give recognition to the quality of its fully organic produce.

During this day, visitors are offered to taste famous local dishes like an avocado milkshake, cateta salad (a potato-based salad), cherry tomatoes, callos (tripe), and ajo bacalao (a cod-based snack), among others. These and many other dishes are displayed on many stands installed throughout the village. This is undoubtedly a fantastic opportunity to savour the excellence of the Mediterranean diet and to get to know the most charming spots in Benamargosa.

After the official opening, a big tasting festival commences with particular regard to the huge, popular paella cooked on a wood fire by the bridge over the Benamargosa River. Performances of typical coros rocieros (“Rocío choirs”) can also be enjoyed as part of the festival.
