Muscat Grape Day. Iznate. August. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.

Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

The streets of Iznate are pretty welcoming as a result of the care taken by the villagers. They make sure their facades are always full of flowers and plant pots, while at the same time preserving the pristine-white lime on the walls. Its urban centre sits on the rugged slope between the Iznate River and the Loma del Barco, which is the highest point in the municipality and thus makes the village one of the best natural viewpoints in the region. At this time of year, Iznate surroundings are a land of green fertility and vineyards—a highly valuable crop in this part of La Axarquía.

This eminently agricultural municipality is well known not only for its peacefulness and warmth, but also for its muscatel grape production, which is used to elaborate excellent wines and, of course, the famous raisins (a true icon for its people). During the summer season, specifically in August and September, locals proceed to harvest and dry the grapes. Entire families move to the countryside over these months to carry out this manual labour that starts with a big celebration of gratitude for the harvest. As it could not be otherwise, the festival is a tribute to raisins, the most emblematic fruit of the locality.

The Muscat Grape Day begins at dusk with a flea market where all kinds of handmade regional products can be found. Later, the town's Municipal Band and the most representative authorities will be opening the Gastronomic Route. The tour runs through the whole village, enabling visitors to enjoy the beautifully decorated streets while savouring the great variety of local dishes that the inhabitants have altruistically prepared. The sound of the Pandas de Verdiales (verdiales bands) can be heard in the background throughout the route.

Once the tour is over, take place—around 10 p.m.—the opening ceremony and the Premios Moscatel awards presentation in the Plaza Puerta la Martina square.
