Soup of the Seven Ingredients. El Burgo. February. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

No traveller can remain unmoved by the first glimpse of this place. Wrapped in forest-covered mountains, El Burgo rises on a hill, defying the march of time. This municipality is located in the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range and within less than an hour's drive from Málaga, which makes it the ideal place for nature and tranquillity lovers. It is graced by the Turón River—with its crystal-clear waters—and dense forests in the mountains, brimming with holm oaks, Spanish firs, and pine trees. Its wide straight streets, large landscaped plazas, olive groves, grain fields, and orchards are part of its scenery too, without forgetting its local gastronomy, craftwork and festivals. Due to its strategic location, it has been home to many civilisations, from lithic axe manufacturers to the Celts, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Visigoths, and the Arabs, until today.

For the same reason, family clans used to live in this municipality. El Burgo welcomes now many visitors who want to hike around an exceptional natural environment, see its singular streets originated from the Moorish and Christian mixture, and visit the many popular local events.

The traditional cuisine in the Sierra de las Nieves has a wide array of soups and stews with humble origins that are now considered an example of the famous Mediterranean diet, as is the case with the Sopa de los Siete Ramales (Soup of the Seven Ingredients).

28th of February, which is also Andalusia Day, marks the festival devoted to this dish, considered an icon of the village. This peculiar name refers to its main ingredients: tomato, pepper, onion, garlic, bread, potato and wild asparagus. Although its preparation is not very difficult, it should start early during the festive day in El Burgo, considering there are several tasks to be carried out, such as the bread crumbling and the slicing and frying of the vegetables.

At lunchtime, everyone in the Los Siete Ramales Festival will be able to savour some of the thousands of servings cooked in conventional dornillos (wooden bowls).
