Asparagus Day. Sierra de Yeguas. April. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.

Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

Although in the past the Arab culture and architecture have influenced many Málaga towns, there is no evidence of Arab settlements in this locality, but Neolithic and Roman life. Surprisingly enough, this is why Sierra de Yeguas is more similar to a Castilian village due to its extensive and solid layout.

Over the last few decades, the economy of Sierra de Yeguas has been linked to agriculture and specifically to the cultivation of asparagus. Since the eighties, these lands have produced the asparagus that has brought the municipality fame and which has continued to be grown organically over the years.
The Day of the Asparagus serves as a tribute to the product that represents one of the economic drivers, and particularly to the farmers for their daily work in the fields.

The main attraction of this celebration is the asparagus tasting, offering asparagus cooked either in traditional fashion, in omelettes, in scrambled eggs, or even grilled, along with the giant paella containing more than a thousand servings.

There is also a creative cooking contest rewarding the most original and best-prepared dish made from asparagus —the taste, innovation, presentation, doneness, texture, and seasoning are being assessed.
This superb agricultural market has over 30 regional companies selling not only the famous asparagus but also sausages, artisan cheeses, oils and pastries.
