Carratraca lies on the border, adjoining the Serranía de Ronda and Antequera regions, and is considered to be the gateway to the Guadalhorce Valley. The town is nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Blanquilla. These mountains enclose a spectacular neoclassical spa—built in the mid-19th century—bathed by the sulphurous waters of a natural spring that is famous for its healing properties.
This peaceful town of Arabic origin has managed to mix the latest traditions with the deepest Al-Andalus roots. The Al-Andalus Festival is a case in point, intended to promote the Moorish cultural legacy.
Year after year, visitors are brought back in time to when cultural coexistence was a reality.
Back then, the market was the actual meeting point for the economic and cultural life of the time. And, of course, there will be a traditional market you can enjoy, as well as theatre plays, dancing performances, parades, and a craft exhibition.
Other anticipated shows include the concerts held in the Natural Auditorium, which is dug into the rock in the mountainside and resembles a Roman amphitheatre. Its spectacular acoustics are admired by visitors and performers alike.
At nightfall, the village glows with the light of 25,000 candles that embellish the scenery while flamenco singing and Al-Andalus dancing impregnate every corner of the town.
