Genalguacil lies peacefully in the Genal Valley, more specifically in Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja Natural Area, right in the middle of the Serranía de Ronda. Surrounded by mountains covered in trees such as pines, chestnuts, cork oaks, Spanish firs, and gall oaks, the village is always lit up by either the sun or the Mediterranean moon.

Like all other villages sitting in the Genal Valley, Genalguacil boasts a maze of up-hill, winding streets and alleys with white-washed facades, revealing the Moorish origin of this little village with only 600 inhabitants.

With its centuries-long history, this peculiar village has acquired a rich legacy of traditions, including the distinctive festivities that turn the municipality into the only inhabited museum in the world.
During the Encounters with Art event held every two years, artists from all over the world get together to create, exchange ideas and experiences and experience communal living. The local authority provides accommodation, food, as well as materials and utensils. In return, every work of art made at the event becomes part of the patrimony of the village. A selection of the stone, wooden, metal, cork and ceramic sculptures as well as murals, collages, paintings, photographs, and different pieces of work are placed all over the village in the squares, streets, and public places, while others are exhibited in the Municipal Museum. These Encounters stick to the principles that led to the creation of this event, materialized in the search for creative connections between art and nature fostering the development of this small village and its key role in this creative experience involving togetherness and nature.
