In the foothills of the Sierras de Tejeda and Almijara Natural Park, right in the heart of La Axarquía, lies Salares. This small municipality stretches across a narrow area bordering the province of Granada and into the Axarquía to the south.

Uncovered rocks at the top of the highest peaks further highlight the green fields in the village's surroundings. The rivers Salares and Sedella run close by, wetting some farming areas with the mountain streams.

The town is included in the Mudéjar Route. Thus, a stroll through its streets helps visitors to explore its Moorish past. Although other cultures like the Romans can still be felt, they are overshadowed by the Arabic influence, which did leave significant traces in its urban configuration. A case in point is the tower of the Mudéjar fortress, under which the village was gradually shaped.

Its multicultural past has marked Salare's identity to such an extent that its residents are proud to celebrate this heritage by holding the Arab-Andalus Festival in September. This two-day event kicks off on Saturday morning with the souk opening, featuring the organic farming and craft market.

At noon, one can attend the intercultural workshops and shortly afterwards taste some local products. Later in the afternoon, the contests begin (slinging, slingshotting, and ribbon races), and music takes over the streets until well into the night.

On Sunday, it is customary to have a tasty traditional breakfast and then enjoy falconry displays, storytelling sessions, short film screenings, and literary readings.
