Aguardiente Festival. Jubrique. December. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.

Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

Aguardiente-making tradition in Jubrique, a small town in the Serranía de Ronda right in the heart of the Genal Valley, dates back to the 18th century when 70% of its fields were vineyards. At that time, over fifty stills were known to exist in the municipality.

The introduction of factory-made aguardiente into the market severely reduced this traditional activity over the years, leading to its near-extinction. As a result, it was confined to family production using just over half a dozen copper stills.

In an effort to recover this artisanal practice, the Town Hall of Jubrique held the First Aguardiente Competition in 2013. The competition is now part of the festival, having stills installed in the town square. Here, both locals and visitors will be able to see how the liquor is made. A group of experts then assesses the aguardiente, and an award ceremony follows.

Aside from the stands where one can taste fritters with chocolate, the association "Escuela de Arte" and the women's association "La Higüela" have offered their handmade works since 2014. These pieces of work are made of fabric, clay, wood or glass.
