Map of the urban route of Benadalid (in Spanish and in English)

This publication has been made under the Development Plan to Promote Tourism in the Serrania de Ronda, is bilingual (English and Spanish), and includes at the back a description and a map of the urban routes of the Serrania de Ronda.

The current layout of Benadalid dates back to the 8th century when Moors dominated here. The berber tribe that installed in these lands was the Beni-Al-Jalid, from whose name derived Benadalid or “Descendants of Jalid”. Remains found prove that Benadalid was a place of defence and also that a fortress existed even in the Roman period.

The municipality extends from the Genal River to the neighbour valley of the Guadiaro. These territories are framed within a great contrast and rugged relief. The Genal valley is plenty of olive trees, chestnut trees, ilexes and cork oaks. However, in the Guadiaro valley we can find grapevines, almond trees, and cereal fields. Between these two valleys, where the Rock of Benadalid is found (1,116 m).

Recommenden Walk:

The route will be walked by the narrow and quiet streets of Benadalid, which will bring to our minds its Moorish past. Let us start the route on the Castle-Cemetery of the municipality. At this point, you will find different landmarks that will call your attention: the Crosses and the magnificent views of the Genal valley. Then, go down by San Isidoro street to come out to the Church and Nueva Square. Continue on to the main square, named Beni-Al-Jali square, which is the meeting point for locals. From here, going through Fuente street, you will get to the washing place and to the starting point that reaches Benalaurîa. Take the Carnicerîa and Real Street; continue going up in the path to reach the highest part, where you will enjoy of great views of the Genal Valley.
