Sustainble Rock Climbing. El Chorro. Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Area

This nature site was protected under the Law 2/1989 by the Andalusian Parliament. It is a conservation area due to its natural value that includes stunning landscapes, such as the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Gorge, with important colonies of animals that live in rocky habitats. There are rather peculiar plants as well, such as endangered species Rupicapnos africana subsp. decipiens, which only lives in Andalusian and Moroccan limestone mountains. Moreover, there is a great number of birds that nest on rocks, and plenty of breeding pairs of griffon vultures, red-billed choughs, Alpine swifts, and less common golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and some endangered species like the Bonelli’s eagle or the Egyptian vulture.

This document is meant to raise awareness of the need for rock climbing that is environmentally friendly, and for informing climbers about the rules to be followed during this activity in Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Area.
