Monuments and Art > Hermitage and Chapel

This hermitage was built in the 18th century in the Osunillas district in accordance with the wishes of a group of sailors who, after narrowly avoiding shipwreck during a severe storm and being washed up on our shores, decided to offer their gratitude to the saint. This chapel was rebuilt and inaugurated on the 5th of July 1981. During its early years, it appears to have been run by a congregation of Benedictine monks.

The hermitage is extremely popular with the local inhabitants, being the scene of a number of pilgrimages and open-air festivals. It is also the venue for the festivities in honour of San Antón held on the 17th of January, which include the traditional blessing of the animals, as well as those dedicated to San Blas (3rd of February) in which the popular ring- shaped “rosquilla” cakes are blessed. May sees a pilgrimage in honour of San Isidro, while the local Osunillas pilgrimage and open-air festival take place on the last Sunday in June.
