Hermitage of Calvario

Diputación de Málaga
PR-A 171 Mijas - Benalmádena

Hermitage of Calvario

Sierra de Mijas
Zip Code 29649
Monuments and Art > Hermitage and Chapel

Built in 1710, it was formerly used as a spiritual retreat for the Carmelite monks from the monastery that once stod on the site now occupied by the hermitage named after the patron saint, La Virgen de la Peña.

It is reached via a path along which a Via Crucis passes during Holy week. Its proximity to the town and the beauty of the path itself have made it a popular choice for a relaxing stroll (the path is marked out by iron crosses), while breathtaking views of Mijas and the rest of the coast can be enjoyed from the hermitage.

The hermitage only opens on Fridays during Lent and on the first Friday in March for the festivities in honour of the Cristo de Medinaceli.
