Castle of Cártama (Unique Site)
Recommended month to visit it: January.
In the Hoya of Málaga, the las navigable section of the Guadalhorce river, by the foot of the Sierras of Espartales and La Llana, we find Cártama, inland waterway port during Roman times.
And very near to Cártama, on the wild summit of the Cerro de la Ermita [Hill of the Chapel], from where one can enjoy superb views of the Vega del Guadalhorce [Meadow of the Guadalhorce], there is a Muslim castle that watches over the horizon. It was one of the main bastions in the defence of Málaga. It has a rectangular plan and a double defensive enclosed areas. The first had ten towers and the second, which was closer to the city, kept eight towers and a flanking tower.
The fortress was prepared to resist a siege, thanks to the support of a cistern of the Caliphate era. Today the only siege that it suffers is that of its peaceful visitors.
