Tower of Homage and Fortress
Despite being built in the 8th century, it was not until the 13th century that it acquired significance. It later became one of the most important fortresses in the Nazarí kingdom during the 14th and 15th centuries. The tower is, the only surviving feature of the original fortress, which was restored in 1970, and affords breathtaking views of the town and the valley of Vélez-Málaga.
The Alcazaba was mentioned in records back in the 12th century. However, only documents from the 13th century and the Nasrid era reveal the administrative role played by Vélez-Málaga in the region of La Axarquía and also in the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.
