Palace of Marquis of Villadarias

C/ Lucena, 35
Zip Code 29200
Monuments and Art > Remarkable Building

This is the best Baroque building of its kind in all Antequera. It is a Palace commissioned by Francisco del Castillo y Fajardo, the second Marquis of Villadarîas. This person also held other titles such as; Capitán General de los Ejêrcitos de su Majestad en Andalucîa y Valencia.

Built at the outset of the 18th century, its facade is divided up into six windowed sections and three floors. The most outstanding element is without doubt the monumental Baroque front which is divided up on theree tiers in red stone from the Torcal mountains. There are four Toucan columns on the first tier with round capitals, while the balcony is the best feature of the second. Finally on the third tier the curved pediment elaborated is also quite special. The rest of the facade was remodelled in the 19th century.

There is a strange story venid the presence of the stone cilindres and chains that are on either side of the main entrance. It would appear that in 1730 King Felipe 5th and his entourage stayed at this palace for five days. Some twenty years later the, then third Marquis of Villadarîas asked for permission to set the cylindrical stones and chains at the entrance so as to “remember this honour in all times”.

As you access the interior of the Palaca there is an entrance hall where the steps that used to be used to help people get out of the carts are still found. Thisa is separated from the house by a beautiful iron gate from the 19th century. The inner courtyard of the house is square and has brick arches on twelve Toscan columns made from limestone from El Torcal.

The staircase is rectangular and is covered with a vaulted ceiling with plasterwork decoartions from the 17th century. A painting by Juan Correa of Virgen de Guadalupe de Mêjico, which is framed by some excellent plasterwork, is on the wall on the second flight of stairs.
