Church of Santa Catalina

Plaza de la Constitución, 8
Zip Code 29752
Monuments and Art > Hermitage and Chapel

This building is almost at the end of the street that passes through Sayalonga. It is another Medujer style construction from the 16th century, which has been restored several times. It is divided up into two naves that are supported by sqare columns that have half-round arches. The ceiling is covered by wooden pannelling or the Epistle nave that houses in the back a small capel devoted to the Virgen del Rosario.

The image of the Virgen is polychrome and made true to the Granada school of design from the 17th century. On the outside perhaps the most outstanding of all elements to note is its simplicity. Access is through a half-pointed arched gateway within a stone framework and a square tower which has a second tier with a half-round arched octagonal belfry. The San Antón chapel is separate from the church and houses a polychrome wooden statue of the saint that dates back to the 18th century.
