Alminar de Salares (Minaret of Salares)

This Almohad minaret rises 12 m, and the decorative red brickwork on its sebka-style panels contrasts with the pure whiteness of the house.  In the 16th century, the highest section of the tower was added to Christianize it.

The minaret is part of the village parish church, but it was once part of the Muslim mosque that stood on the same site, and which was transformed into a Christian place of worship. This minaret was declared to be a Monument of National Interest on November 16th 1979 and remains today as one of the finest examples of Almohade art that exists in the whole of Spain. It was built between the XIII and the XIVth centuries in typical Arabic red brick material, with two tiers and four sections decorated in the wonderful “sebka” style.
