Church of Nazareno

Diputación de Málaga
Ermita del Nazareno. Archidona (4)

Church of Nazareno

This late 17th century building was heavily renovated in the 18th century. It was once a part of the Colegio de los Padres Escolapios.

Of note amongst its images and altarpieces is the central altarpiece, which dates back to the second half of the 18th century and features a double colonnade at its sides, leading to an image-dressing room with a half-sphere vault which houses an image of Jesus of Nazareth (Archidona’s patron) which dates back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries and is attributed to the Granada master craftsman Pablo de Rojas.

The chapel is currently home to the Jesús Nazareno y Marîa Santîsima de la Sangre Easter Society, which parades the images of Cristo de la Expiración con la Magdalena, the Virgen de la Sangre and El Nazareno.
