San Agustin’s Church

C/ Infante Don Fernando, 13
Zip Code 29200
Monuments and Art > Hermitage and Chapel

This church features the second most important tower in town and, inside, a wide, deep main chapel covered by a Gothic crossing vault which was renovated in the 17th century with the addition of Mannerist plasterwork.

The main structure of the building was constructed between 1550 and 1556, the work being overseen by Diego de Vergara.

The exterior, which was recently renovated, is most unusual in appearance due to the layout of its main faèade at the foot of the side wall and tower. The former is an eminently-Mannerist construction whose highlight is provided by the elevated balcony, which confers a more civic air upon the monument. The tower, wedged between two buttresses, was built in two different periods, the 17th and 18th centuries.

This church has been renovated many times, and the replacement of the Renaissance ceiling structure of the nave, designed by Diego de Siloê, by the half-barrel vault with lunettes that prevails today was a great loss, architecturally-speaking.

The main chapel, rebuilt within the Mannerist style, is one of the most exquisite pieces of architecture to be found in Antequera. Of rectangular ground plan and covered by a Gothic vault, its main point of interest is its decorative plasterwork, painted and gilded by Francisco Rodrîguez de Alarcón. The inlaid canvases depicting the life of San Agustîn that adorn it help to create a space of great balance and beauty.

The paintings on display in this Augustine church are of great interest, the highlight being El Calvario, which hangs in the main chapel, the ten canvases depicting the life of San Agustîn inlaid in the stucco work and the large painting of San Nicolás that now hangs in the spot once occupied by the man altarpiece.
