Castle of Santi Petri
This castle was one of the most important strongholds in the second line of defence of Bobastro, which was the capital of the kingdom of Omar Ben Hafsum during the Califate. One of the uses that it was given was as a prison for the Christian prisoners. E
Local tradition talks of an underground tunnel that connects the church ( the old mosque) with the castle.
During the uprising led by Omar Ben Hafsún against the Omeyas from Cordoba the stonghold of Santi Petri (Hins-Xan-Biter) played a very important role in the defence of Bobastro.
The town was handed over to the Catholic Kings in May 1487 and they proceeded to nominate captain Mosên Pedro Santiesteban as Mayor. Later on the Moors from Almogia also took part in the rebellion in 1570. On defeat the majority of the Arabs were thrown out of the town and surrounding area, leaving the land around the town totally uninhabited. The Christians were quick to move in and repopulate the towns of Teba and Antequera, which at that time were part of the kingdom of Seville
The castle is very badly signposted and cannot be accessed.
