Diputación de Málaga
Museo de la Cofradía del Santo Sepulcro 1. Málaga

Museo de la Cofradía del Santo Sepulcro (Museum of the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre)

Here, two thrones have been perfectly mounted and displayed for your contemplation and delight, and occupy the museum's main space. On this floor you can admire the display cases with objects from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On the first floor there is a gallery with paintings from Málaga from the early 19th century to the present.

The collection

The Brotherhood's house is home to the museum of the Brotherhood of the Santo Sepulcro (Holy Sepulchre) that makes procession on Good Friday and whose symbol is the cross of Jerusalem.

On the ground floor you can see the throne room. The throne of Christ is a representation of a coffin, grave or raised area with ornamentation often used in temples where mortal remains are displayed. And the Virgen de la Soledad (Virgin of Solitude) is a stunning silver structure with candle holders and canopy .

The exhibition space has two more rooms. The first is devoted to the most characteristic objects and robes of the brotherhood, while in the second are the brotherhood's banners. Many of the items displayed are used in the procession on Good Friday.

Behind the figure of Christ, Chopin's Funeral March adapted by the prestigious musician from Málaga, Perfecto Artola, is played. The Virgen de la Soledad is escorted by Spanish Marines playing the Salve Marinera.

The Building

Along with the Student's museum, it shares a privileged enclave in Alcazabilla Street, opposite the Roman Theatre and the Alcazaba de Málaga, within the especially interesting triangle at Málaga's centre formed by the Alcazaba, the Cathedral and the Picasso Museum. Construction was originally planned in 1977, although there was not enough space until the plot where it is currently located was bought in 1995.

In December 2002, the sacred museum adjoining the convent of Cistercian was opened. It consists of two floors and an attic with beautiful views of the Roman and Arab Málaga.
