The History Museum
The History Museum of Fuengirola, inaugurated on the 14th of February 2003, is home to relics depicting the last 4 centuries of the town’s history. Covering an area of 1,700 square metres, the museum takes the visitor on a trip through time that takes in such diverse periods as ancient times, the Roman era and the tourist boom of the 1970s.
The visit begins with a brief introduction to both the museum and Fuengirola itself entitled “the town and its surroundings”, which will help the visitor to understand the context within which Fuengirola has developed. This is followed by a tour of the historical exhibits on display, which represent a whole series of cultures ranging from the Phoenicians to the Romans, not forgetting the Muslims or the Christian conquest. Items on show include findings dating back as far as the 7th century before Christ.
The last 160 years, during which the town became independent from Mijas, are also represented. Farming instruments, grape-treating utensils and remnants of modern industry and commerce make way for the development of tourism.
A total of fourteen different exhibition areas offer the visitor a linear history lesson which finishes in the 1950s. One of the museum’s main attractions is a piece known as the Venus de Fuengirola, which was discovered on the site of the Roman baths at La Finca el Secretario.
