This smokestack is a relic of a factory complex that was part of the industrial Málaga of the second half of the 19th century. The city became the second most industrialised city in Spain. Factory workers had their houses built in the vicinity, resulting in the Huelin district.

Having established important Royal Factories in Málaga such as the Royal Playing Card Factory in Macharaviaya, the tin sheet one in Júzcar, or the Wool one in Antequera, only in the first third of the 19th century could the industrial development of the city be fully acknowledged.

Málaga’s west coast was to become the city's leading area in industrial growth due to logistical advantages, including its proximity to the port and later to the railway station (1845), as well as its extensive land.
The first foundries in Marbella were followed by the installation of new ones in Málaga, which benefited from their proximity to the port for coal supply from England. The iron and steel industry would be joined by a strong textile industry, along with enhanced equipment and technology for sugar production.
During the last third of the 19th century, Málaga’s industry went into crisis, leading to the collapse of the iron and steel industry and the decline of the textile business, which was further aggravated by the outbreak of phylloxera plague. However, some recovery was achieved in the first decades of the 20th century until the start of the Spanish civil war in 1936 by focusing on different industrial sectors like food and agriculture, metallurgy, and the chemical industry while maintaining the textile industry.
