Cave architecture in Coín
The site includes five large caves that were carved out of the travertine stone, as well as other small side chambers. They date from the 8th to the 10th century and have been interpreted as a local Mozarabic monastery and a church. Regarding architecture, it comprises three central naves and two secondary ones. With a total surface of 246 m2, this building is one of the largest of its kind in the province.
This monumental unit is unique for having been carved out of the very same limestone rock. However, it features numerous aesthetic and functional details, such as horseshoe arches, niches, buttresses, and different types of vaults, ventilation galleries and escape routes, as well as a bench for the liturgical service among other peculiarities.
