Museo de la Ciudad de Vélez-Málaga (MUVEL, Museum of Vélez-Málaga)
It explores the entire history of Vélez-Málaga as part of the Axarquía region, ranging from Prehistory to the Modern Age, including the Phoenician world, the Romanization and subsequent Islamization process of the city and the hinterland.
MUVEL houses and interprets relevant material from Phoenician sites on the eastern coast of Málaga such as Toscanos and Cerro de la Capellanía. The latter is particularly relevant within the framework of Málaga for understanding the evolution of the territorial occupation model. After its abandonment in the 8th century BCE, coinciding with the Phoenician colonies establishment on the coast, it was re-occupied between the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE, during the Iberian period.
Opened in March 2017, it stands in the old Hospital Real de San Marcos (Royal Hospital of San Marcos), which was created by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487 and handed over in the 17th century to the order of San Juan de Dios, after which it was renamed.
Over 1,700 documents and archaeological artefacts from sites in La Axarquía and elsewhere in the Málaga province are on display in the facilities and rooms surrounding its Mudéjar patio.
The museum explores the entire history of Vélez-Málaga as part of the Axarquía region, ranging from Prehistory to the Modern Age and more particularly to the fortification efforts on the coast against piracy and the urban modernisation from the 18th century onwards.
Along the way to the Modern Age section, this interesting exhibition presents remarkable remains of the Phoenician world on the eastern coast of Málaga and analyses the Romanisation process and subsequent Islamization of Vélez-Málaga and the hinterland. It also explains the social, cultural, economic and political evolution of the city throughout the years.
