Palace of Buenavista. Picasso Museum of Málaga
This museum is located in the Buenavista Palace, a 17th century Renaissance building and the most important example of stately home architecture of the period.
The donations made by Christine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, a total of 155 works by Pablo Picasso, have been the cornerstone of the whole of this project. From the aforementioned works, a substantial part was donated outright, as follows: Christine Ruiz-Picasso donated 133 pieces (14 oil paintings, 9 sculptures, 44 drawings, a sketchbook of the Royan series with another 36 drawings, 58 etchings and 7 ceramics), whilst Bernard Ruiz-Picasso donated 22 works (5 oil paintings, 2 drawings, 10 etchings and 5 ceramics). As well as this impressive ensemble there are also the works that have been assigned, free of charge, by way of a 10-year renewable agreement with the artist's heirs and which constitute a further 49 works (23 oil paintings, 2 sculptures, 7 drawings, 5 etchings and 12 ceramics).
Over 200 works of art, between paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and etchings, constitute a testimony of this artist's long and prolific career, from his academic beginnings to his final paintings in the 70s, making this permanent collection an illustration of Picasso's extraordinary artistic eye.
The museum also displays the Phoenician remains found during the renovation of the Palace. Apart from the permanent collection, the museum also organises temporary exhibitions and, from time to time, a series of parallel activities related to the figure of Picasso: workshops, conferences, concerts, courses, etc.
