DESCRIPTION

This church is situated next to the Cathedral and its most distinguishing feature is its portal, which gives onto calle Santa Marîa, in front of Santo Tomê Hospital.

It is of Gothic-Isabeline style and the decoration on the upper section depicts Cardinal Pedro de Mendoza and the confessor of the Catholic Queen, Hernando de Talavera, offering the Mosque, which had been consecrated, to the Virgin. Also worthy of mention is the Plateresque altarpiece.

________________________________________________________________________

The Church of Santa Marîa del Sagrario was built by papal order of 12 February 1488, as was the Cathedral. Its original location was the corner of the Patio de los Naranjos (Orange Square). During the Bishopric of Diego Ramîrez de Villaescusa (1500-1516), work began on the portal on calle Santa Marîa, but it was not finished until the Episcopate of Cêsar Riario. This portal contains a beautiful sculpted representation with images of flora, seals, coats of arms and a complex iconographic depiction of the Virgin, the Almighty and various praying figures. Later, in the 18th century, two pyramids topped by ball and a stone cross were added.

In the 18th century the building, in a very bad state of repair, was pulled down and a new one was built. Today, the church has a box floor plan with a flat apse and half-barrel vaulted ceiling with transverse ribs and lunettes.

The Baroque choirs stalls were built in 1749, under the order of the technical architect of the Cathedral, Antonio Ramos.

ARTISTIC WORKS

The central altarpiece came from San Pedro Church in Becerril de los Campos and was installed in the Iglesia del Sagrario in 1944. It is of Plateresque style and shows figures of the Apostles, the Crowned Virgin, La Piedad, the Calvary and the Eternal Father.

The first altarpiece on the left-hand side of the main altar, which dates back to the 16th century, is of Mannerist style, with certain classic elements (columns, pilasters, triangular pediment, etc.).

A red marble pulpit, of an amazing colour, which dates back to the 17th century.

A 17th century altarpiece depicting the Virgin of Lourdes.

An 18th century altarpiece dedicated to the Our Lady Virgen del Rosario,
An altarpiece dedicated the Heart of Jesus, dated around the middle of the 17th century, with particularly interesting Solomonic columns. The iconography of this altarpiece is devoted to the Virgin.

An 18th century altarpiece depicting Saint Joseph, decorated with estipite and Solomonic columns.

An altarpiece depicting Christ Mutilated, of modern creation by Josê Navas Parejo. This altarpiece, together with the one depicting the Eternal Father, are the only two works that survived the fire that devoured the former central altarpiece.

As regards paintings, the most important are: The Saviour, The Virgin, and other painting of various Apostles and Sainted Bishops.
