Monuments and Art > The Castle and the Wall

This monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus was built by Doctor Esteban Martîn y Martîn, with the help of builders from nearby Mijas, between 1987 and 1994. It pays homage to the Discovery of America via a blend of different architectural styles. Inside, it contains a number of stained-glass windows of immense artistic beauty.

The builders of this stone castle, which occupies an area of 1,500 m ², adhered faithfully to the techniques made popular during the Lower Middle Ages. A tour of the castle is a journey back in time, a series of symbols and engravings enabling the visitor to relive the history of the Discovery of America.

The castle pays homage to the three religions that co-existed in Spain during the XV century, the period when Columbus made his discovery. So, its structure and decoration bear traces of Christian, Arabic and Jewish architecture. However, there is one architectural feature that does not belong to any of the aforementioned cultures – in the midst of the castle’s towers stands a delightful Chinese pagoda. This was Esteban Martîn’s way of commemorating the original dream that lay behind Columbus’ voyage to America – the discovery of a parallel route from Europe to Asia.

In addition, inside the Castillo de Colomares the visitor can admire the smallest chapel in the world, devoted to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. Of irregular ground plan, it occupies an area of just 1.96 m² and is home to images of Christ and Saint Elizabeth fashioned by the builder of the castle himself.
