Monumental Cemetery of San Sebastian
One of the most outstanding elements to be found in the village is its cemetery, which has been awarded the title of Monumento Nacional (National Monument).
It is situated on the outskirts of the town and can be seen from the motorway called “Las Pedrizas” that passes by on its way to Malaga. The unique combination of pantheons, and burial mounds was what led it to being declared as a National Monument in 1980.
On one of his many visits to the village, the famous Spanish writer, Antonio Gala visited the cemetery. When he actually saw really impressed him as he said later that he had never seen such a magnificent necropolis. The Local Authority of the village agreed to reserve him a space in the cemetery for the writer’s burial.
