Beaches

Huelin Beach, on the west shores of Malaga, is 4 km from the city centre, between the coastal areas of San Andrés and La Misericordia, also in the urban zone.

With coarse dark sand, it is 700 metres long and 15 metres wide on average. There are a number of leisure zones around the beach, places to practice sport and parks for the family to enjoy. What's more, many of the beach bars offer a sun lounger service where you can relax and enjoy yourself on a hot day.

It is interesting to note that this beach experiences the phenomenon known as “La Ola del Melillero” (The Melilla Wave). A sudden brief rise in the sea level caused by the approach and braking of the ferry from Melilla as it arrives at Malaga Harbour means you need to watch your towel and personal objects if you are close to the shore.

The San Andrés Rowing Club is also based at this beach. The club takes part in the jabega rowing league and holds one of the qualifying rounds. In high season it is possible to rent nautical equipment including pedal boats.

As in almost all the Malaga coast, Huelin has beach bars and restaurants serving fresh fried fish and other typical dishes of the area.

The beach is named after the district of Huelin, a humble working-class area designed in the 19th century, which took its name from the industrial trader, Eduardo Huelin Reissig, who made major investments at the height of the industrial revolution.

The district has developed and evolved over the years, with the construction of the Antonio Machado Promenade (between the end of Malaga Harbour and Juan XXIII Avenue) and Huelin Park, resulting in a radical change to the area, converting it into a leisure area.
