The National Architecture Journal (1943) made the following reference to the Puerta Oscura Gardens (Dark Entrance Gardens):

"Parallel to the construction of the Alcazaba, and as a complement to the building, Gerrero Strachan has drafted the plans for the development of the surrounding areas, including the existing Puerta Oscura Gardens and those extending the Park. In both projects he has endeavoured to sum up the characteristics of the southern garden with the means available in the locality. The former is resolved using a stepped configuration, following the slope of the hill of the Alcazaba and its most outstanding features are the colours of the different plant species, laid out in skilful combination with the architectural elements: paving, steps, fountains, etc.-, all framed by geometric lines of a traditional decorative composition".

Guerrero Strachan designed these pleasant gardens, which occupy the southern slopes at the foot of Gibralfaro, with unquestionable skill, transforming a rugged slope into a succession of terraces, paths and small pergolas that surprise and delight visitors to the city.

On the other hand, not only do these gardens harmonise beautifully with the walls of the Alcazaba, which they frame, but they should also be valued as part of the exceptional garden ensemble of which they form part, together with the Pedro Alonso Gardens, the Park, the head gardener's house and the Customs House.
