Natural Area > Site of Natural Heritage

The 67 hectares that make up La Desembocadura del Guadalhorce (Mouth of the Guadalhorce) Natural Area are located right in the city of Málaga - a mere seven kilometres from the city's historic centre and near residential developments like that of Guadalmar.

The mouth of this river, which was declared a Natural Area in 1989, consists of the moving water of the arms of the Guadalhorce River and
the standing water in an artificial lagoon complex. Due to its proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar, it is a stopover and resting area for coastal migratory birds and is thus ideal for bird watching.

Location

A few kilometres to the south of the city of Malaga. Main access roads: N-340, N-321.

Relief

The river branches into two forks, forming an alluvial delta which is home to a series of small artificial lakes.

Plant Life

Aquatic plants, lakeside vegetation, primarily reeds, cyperuses and saltworts. The riverbanks are home to poplars, eucalyptuses and a few willows. Tamarisks and palms are also to be found.

Animal Life

Local birdlife includes a number of unusual species such as the ibis, flamenco, spoonbill, black stork, Audouin’s gull and the Caspian tern, as well as others of the more common variety, including herons, shearwaters, terns, coots, anatidae etc. The most frequently-found mammals are rodents, weasels, polecats and foxes.
