Caves in Cortijo de Auta

In the rocky, rough landscape that surrounds the cortijo (traditional southern farmhouse) to the east, several caves were inhabited during the 9th and 10th centuries. Initially, they were part of a larger territorial unit that was occupied at the time of the formation of Al-Andalus: the Auta Valley. Being mentioned in written records as Awta, this archaeological site was already fortified at the beginning of Ibn Hafsun’s revolt in 885.
