GR 243. Sierra de las Nieves. Stage 4: Tolox - Guaro
Our route starts in Tolox, heading up the calle Erilla and leaving the village by the old pathway to Coin. Just before we reach the buildings of the co-operative olive press of Tolox we turn off to the right, following the path of Las Veguetas. After a little more than 2 km this path joins that of Chiribenítez, which marks the boundary of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. We follow this path for another 4 km, almost always heading gently uphill, passing pine trees and some chestnuts, till we reach the pass, Puerto de Chiribenítez, where we turn left in the direction of Puerto Alto (High Pass).
From Puerto Alto and its surroundings we can enjoy the spectacular views over the valleys of the Rio Grande and the Guadalhorce. To the south we can see the Sierra Canucha, capped by the peaks of Los Cuchillos. To the north is the Sierra Prieta and Sierra Cabrilla, with the village of Alozaina set below. To the east are the ranges of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, crowned by the highest peak in the province of Malaga, el Torrecilla.
The descent from Puerto Alto is very steep in parts, leading us down to the stream ‘Arroyo Seco’, which at this point of its course nearly always has water. We follow the stream for about 600 metres before making another steep ascent up to the path ‘del Arroyo’ and the village of Guaro.
