The course, designed by Josê Gancedo, was opened in 1989. The “man from Malaga” is one of the most creative golf designers. His philosophy is to create a golf course without ostentation and with a lot of respect for the natural shape of the land. According to him, “Every designer has his personality and I do what God implies me to do”.
The course has 18 holes, par 70, 5.652 length, and the fairways of Monte Mayor Golf are seeded with Bermuda 419 (as are Augusta or Valderrama) and have some the best greens in Spain.
The tour, which has six tees and bridges to link these with the fairways and greens, makes it ideal for adventurous players. As an example, the tee of the 4th hole is located on a raised platform from which the ball has to land on an island, like the second shot. The green on this hole is next to a lake with a small waterfall.
The green fee includes a buggy for two people. Monte Mayor is frequently voted as one of the five best golf courses to be played in the Costa del Sol.
The Golf course is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The valley, in which Monte Mayor is laid out, clings to the slopes of Monte Mayor, under the ancient gaze of Monte Mayor Castle.
Amongst the Professionals, Alex Cejka practiced a lot here and enjoyed perfecting all his shots at Monte Mayor. He’s the course record holder with 66 (-5).
