Unanimous agreement by the County Council that El Caminito del Rey should be proposed for inclusion on the World Heritage List

At the County Council plenary meeting, the campaign for social and institutional support for the above purpose to be lead together with the surrounding town councils was approved.

The County Council of Málaga plenary meeting has approved the motion to promote the proposal of El Caminito del Rey and its surroundings for inclusion on the UNESCO's World Heritage List. This means that this county body will open a file with written information and graphic details in order to provide arguments for this proposal.

The agreement also includes the formation of the team of experts in collaboration with the surrounding town councils in order to reinforce the reasons for the inclusion that will go into the file. Likewise, campaigns for obtaining the support for the proposal by individuals and institutions is going to be carried out.

The above motion instructs that once the file is completed it should be sent to the Regional Andalusian Government to start its processing.

Currently, the UNESCO has a World Heritage List with 1092 cultural heritage sites, which are natural o mixed, and belong to 167 different countries. They have already recognized as sites of outstanding universal value, and 46 of them are in Spain. Eight of these sites are in Andalusia and one of them in the province: the Dolmens in Antequera.

El Caminito del Rey path has both natural value and it bears testimony of the past related to the electrification and industrialization of the province as it used to be an old walkway built between 1901 and 1905. It was fixed in high cliffs or it was hanging in the air in order to connect the Count of Guadalhorce's reservoir and the Hydroelectric Power Station built on the waterfalls in El Chorro and Gaitanejo.

The main reasons for the inclusion of the trail on the World Heritage List is that this nature site got legally protected by the Andausian Government in 1989 as an outstanding geological example which contains animals and plants of inestimable ecological importance. Besides its natural values, there are also some historically important sites like the Bobastro ruins or the Cave in Ardales.

The refurbishment of El Caminito del Rey path performed by the County Council of Málaga at the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge and natural beauty spot has obtained many important awards in the field of architecture and tourism at national and international level as it sets an example of cultural heritage recovery that fits seamlessly into the surroundings and it is an environmentally friendly and sustainable project. Moreover, it has stimulated the tourism in the area and has been a great attraction for visitors.
