Fiesta del Monfí (Monfí Festival). Cútar. October. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

Cútar is a village in the heart of the Axarquía region, flanked by the municipalities of Benamargosa and El Borge. With an Arab heritage, the town centre offers a beautiful panoramic view of steep and winding streets. Its white facades make the village look like a piece of jewellery embedded in the hillside. It is divided into four main districts: Alto, Bajo, Barrio de la Fuente, and Barrio de la Iglesia.

To pay tribute to its past, the village celebrates the Monfí Festival. The event is aimed to remember all the rebellious Moorish, known as monfíes, who resisted being expelled from a land in which they had lived for eight centuries. At the same time, the festival aims to raise awareness among young people and visitors about the cultural history on which many local customs and traditions are based.

During the celebrations, the narrow white streets are steeped in Monfí traditions. Jaimas (nomad tents) and stalls are placed throughout the village while providing food tastings, and an improvised souk is installed to offer a wide variety of handcrafted and culinary products of the time. Cútar residents walk around dressed in period costumes and encouraging all visitors to join in their dances.

Wrapped in Arab music, two people on stilts stage the story of the Moorish who arrived in the Axarquía in 1505. Also, girls and women perform the Veil Dance to the flute's rhythm around the village.

This charming setting adds to the scents, flavours and melodies that will make you feel as if you were entering a magical world.
