Benagalbón belongs to the Rincón de la Victoria municipality, and among its celebrations can be found the famous "Concurso Tradicional de Verdiales" ("Verdiales Traditional Contest"). It is experienced as a big celebration and stems from the initiative of a group of residents who formed the Peña de Verdiales named "El Revezo" to recover old traditions like the Choque de pandas. The inhabitants of the municipality remain faithful to this event and, when September arrives, they deeply connect with the Málaga musical roots in its earliest expression: the Verdiales.
These pieces possess a great musical interest, both for their antiquity and vitality. They are considered to be artistic creations of socio-cultural nature, belonging to specific geographical locations in the province of Málaga, the Axarquía region, the Guadalhorce Valley, and the Montes de Málaga.
The Verdiales are performed by the so-called Pandas de Verdiales, which are popular groups of people dressed in colourful costumes and gorgeous hats. Conducted by the mayor, they are made up of abanderado (standard bearer), Andalusian caracol singing, dancing, a violin, three/four guitars, three or four cymbals and, in the Comares style, a lute and a bandurria.
The Verdiales Traditional Contest is held on the third Saturday in September and offers visitors a great chance to enjoy splendid performances by the pandas de verdiales while savouring local food and wines.
