Álora is located in the northwest side of the Guadalhorce Valley region. The land integrating this municipality displays the most distinctive landscape of Málaga while bringing together the most diverse sceneries. Here, visitors can enjoy the perfect combination of rugged high mountains (such as the Sierra de Huma), gentle riverside stretches by the Guadalhorce River, and the breathtaking Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. The latter is undoubtedly one of the most striking geographical features to be seen in Spain.

In line with this natural diversity, Álora has a great variety of crops, including citrus, fruit, olive and almond trees. As a result, the local cuisine is particularly valued. Many dishes elaborated with these products contribute to its excellent culinary reputation. Sopas perotas ("Perotas Soups" in Spanish) is a good example—with tomato, onion, pepper, garlic, mint, saffron, ground pepper, and bread among its basic ingredients. Because of its uniqueness, this peasant dish is of such importance that it enjoys a special day in the municipality's festive calendar.

The event takes place in October at the Plaza Baja de la Despedía square, which becomes the meeting point for locals and visitors alike. An extensive activity programme rounds off the day for anyone coming to town to savour this typical dish served with the well-known Álora olives, cateto bread and local wine.
