Map of the urban route of Benaoján (in Spanish and in English)

This publication has been made under the Development Plan to Promote Tourism in the Serrania de Ronda, is bilingual (English and Spanish), and includes at the back a description and a map of the urban routes of the Serrania de Ronda.

The origin of the current town of Benaoján appeared, however, with the arrival of the Arabs, when according to some reports, the Berber tribe descendants of Oján installed themselves nearby Los Cascajares spring. After the conquest in the 15th century, the number of residents in Benaoján was gradually decreasing until the Moriscos (converted Muslims) were expelled from these lands in 1609. At that moment, an ordered was given to resettle Benaoján by seventy families coming from outside, according to official data from 1571.

The railway service created to connect Bobadilla and Algeciras at the end of the 19th century supposed a major boost for the municipality and a new enclave was established around the train station. In the 20th century, the meat processing industry, mainly the pork by-products, has been crucial for the population and economic growth of Benaoján.

Recommended walk:

Let us start the route by the Barriada de la Estación, nearby the railway line that goes parallel to the Guadiaro river. The first place to visit is the Charco de la Barranca (Barranca puddle), formed by a levee that manages the water from the river. Then, continue in the direction of the Los Cascajales spring, one of the most plentiful springs in the Serranîa. From here, go on into the town centre, where you can visit some highlights of the town as well as places full of local colour. A mandatory stop before leaving the village is La Pileta Cave, where you will find a number of different galleries with the most significant cave painting.
Another outstanding visit is El Gato cave, by which the waters of a subterranean river flow out for four kilometres.
