Zip Code 29012
Monuments and Art > Hermitage and Chapel

PERIOD 15th century

This chapel, founded by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, began life as part of the hospital that was on the site, and it is the only part of the construction that still remains today.

The chapel, of Mudejar style, has only one nave with the presbytery on high and to wooden frame ceilings, square over the presbytery and rectangular over the nave. Since 1711, the chapel has been the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Holy Week procession called 'Nuestro Padre Jesús de los Pasos del Monte Calvario y Marîa Santisima del Rocio', though the latter reference to Our Lady, was added later.

Its most significant images include a 17th century sculpture of Saint Joseph and the respective images of the two Brotherhoods that were initially independent: at the main altar, with its Neo-Baroque altarpiece there is a clothed imagen.t. of the Our Lady Virgen del Rocîo and at the side altar a sculpture of Our Lord Jesús Nazareno de los Pasos en el Monte Calvario.

Also important is the crypt-burial place, which has a barrel vault ceiling and contains extremely expressive paintings carried out at the end of the 17th century depicting the transition between life and death. The niches, crowned by skulls and crossbones and mortuary emblems that personify the Fates and death, make up a spine-chilling allegory.
