
Campillos's Lakes
The Natural Reserve of the Campillos’s Lakes is an endorheic lake complex of flat topography of 80 ha of nature reserve and 1,046 ha of protection zone. It is located in the north of Malaga province, to the south east of Fuente de Piedra Lake.
Lake Dulce is the largest, followed by Lake Salada, Capacete, Camuñas, dl Cerero, Redonda, Lobón, Toro, Marcela, Panza and Menaute.. Their waters are of relatively high salinity and occasionally dry up. Lacustrine vegetation (rushes, reeds and cyperuses), somewhat deteriorated in some zones. Herbaceous crops and olive groves grow around the lakes.
Fauna consists primarily of aquatic birds, notably anatidae (shelducks, teals and ducks) and limicolous species (snowy plovers and dunlins). Also to be found are flamingos, stilts, coots and avocets. Reptiles include the eyed lizard and the Montpellier, viperine and water snakes. The green, parsley and common frogs are the most abundant of the amphibians. Notable amongst the mammals are the hare, rabbit, water rat, fox, badger, etc.
Cattle farming and agriculture (cereal crops and olive groves) are carried out in the area.
